In an article yet to be peer-reviewed, the NIA researchers showcase the protective role of nicotinamide riboside (NR) against hearing loss in mice. Nicotinamide Riboside Hearing Loss Reversal ARHL, a condition that affects nearly one-third of the population over 65, often begins by eroding high-frequency sounds. Okur and team embarked on a journey to investigate the long-term effects of NR supplement administration in mice serving as models for ARHL at different frequencies. For lower frequency sounds, treated as well as untreated mice exhibited similar hearing capabilities. Both groups responded to comparable volumes of sound. However, this changed dramatically when confronted with higher-frequency sounds. Mice ingesting the nicotinamide riboside supplement needed significantly less volume to respond compared to their untreated counterparts. The experiment was conducted again after just 10 months when the mice were around a year old (50 in human years). This time, the untreated mice presented graphs featuring flattened waves of diminished auditory responses. Every wave on the graph represents a certain area of the auditory pathway. For further research into the auditory intricacies, the scientists focused on wave 1, representing the inner ear’s cochlea. Here, NR supplementation came to the rescue, sustaining the magnitude of wave 1 throughout the treatment period. Thus, these results substantiate NR’s role in preserving the auditory pathway, potentially solving the issue of age-related hearing loss.
